2023 Graduate Summer Internship @ NFL


Job Description


The NFL is looking to draft rising stars to join their NFL League Office in New York this Summer.

Consideration will only be given to currently enrolled Master’s or MBA students graduating either Winter 2023 or Spring 2024. OVERVIEW

NFL Summer Internship Program participants have the opportunity to contribute to the organization's success while receiving an unmatched, behind-the-scenes learning experience. Though interns work within specific departments, they can explore all aspects of the business of professional football through challenging project assignments, speaker presentations, mentoring relationships, and networking opportunities. The summer program covers a minimum of 10 weeks, from June 5 - August 11, 2023. Interns will be required to work five (5) full days (approximately 40 hours) per week. Interns will be paid an hourly rate for their work. Application Deadline: Applications must be submitted no later than TBD at 11:59 PM EST. EDUCATION: Currently enrolled master’s or MBA student QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior internship/work experience is preferred

  • Required experience in Word, PowerPoint, Excel

  • Interest in the Sports, Entertainment and/or Media industries is a plus

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Eagerness to learn

  • Applicants must be legally permitted to work in the United States and international students must have all visas and employment authorizations before the start of the internship

DEPARTMENTS DESCRIPTIONS: DATA & ANALYTICS: The Data & Analytics team spans Fan, League, and Media data & analytics initiatives. Includes development and refinement of robust enterprise-level analytics, automated dashboard/visualization tools, and data analyses for key strategic priorities.

D&A Summer Intern responsibilities:

  • Development of ticketing models/algorithms using NFL database

  • Training Clubs on use of analytic tools

  • Game schedule modeling

  • League-wide data reporting

  • Media metrics dashboarding

  • Research for contract negotiations


D&A Summer Intern Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA Student

  • Preferred Major and Coursework: Preferred coursework includes Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Econometrics, or other quantitatively rigorous fields

  • Consulting, banking, finance, sports business, or data & analytics experience

  • Ability to own and manage multiple distinct projects; excellent written and verbal skills

  • Advanced in Excel, PowerPoint, SQL, SAS, Python, R, large data sets

CLUB BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: The Club Business Development team supports the 32-Member Clubs in all aspects of their business operations while serving as liaisons to the Clubs and the League. The team utilizes a combination of analytics and functional expertise in sales and marketing to develop 'next practices' and facilitates the sharing of 'best practices' between clubs.

Club Business Development Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Analyze ticket sales, pricing, premium seating, and sponsorship data to deliver club benchmarking reports and league reporting to develop actionable insights, best practices, and help inform club and league strategy

  • Support the Club Business Development team on managing communications between league and clubs, club data collection efforts, and presentation builds for market visits

  • Support in the development of dashboards and reporting

  • Document and catalog best practices in ticket sales, pricing, premium seating and suite sales, and sponsorship

  • Perform SWOT analyses of Club business performance

  • Support League fan experience initiatives, including researching fan engagement best practices across sports properties, inside and outside the NFL

  • Support internal strategy efforts, providing recommendations and creating analyses, guides, and documentation to improve value delivered by Club BD team to Clubs

  • Support cross-functional coordination & planning within the League and across Clubs for key tentpole events (e.g. Pro Bowl, Super Bowl, Draft), marketing campaigns, etc.

Club Business Development Summer Intern Preferred Qualifications:

  • Major/coursework: Bachelor’s degree in quantitative/analytic or business field

  • Background in analytics, consulting, or project management preferred

FOOTBALL DATA & ANALYTICS: The Football Data and Analytics analyzes league competitiveness, pace of play, officiating and health/safety with the overall goal of enhancing the on-field product. This team leverages data science and statistics to conduct its research while also working with league groups on other innovative ways of using football data.

Football D&A Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Write code in Python and/or R.

  • Use NFL data to create a research project analyzing rule changes, officiating, the NFL schedule, competitiveness, and other aspects of NFL game play.

  • Support football data team’s ongoing data science workstreams.

Football D&A Summer Intern Qualifications:

  • Preferred Major and Coursework: Currently enrolled in a Master's in Statistics or Data Science, or related program

  • Advanced coursework in statistics or data science.

  • Proficient in R/RStudio and/or Python.

  • Experience with statistical modeling and data visualization.

  • Passion for the game of football.

  • Experience working with sports tracking/x-y coordinate data.

  • Knowledge of advanced NFL metrics such as CPOE, EPA and Win Probability.

  • Ability to explain technical findings to non-technical people.

INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL: The NFL has 216m fans outside the US, and continued international growth is one of the strategic priorities for the league. 2022 has been a pivotal year for the NFL in this regard with the broadest slate of regular season games held outside of the US – 5 games in 4 stadia across 3 countries, the launch of our International Home Market Area initiative, our first talent identification camps in Africa and continued investment in growing the game at every level, from building grassroots participation with NFL Flag up to our International Player Pathway program. Underpinning this is the work undertaken by the NFL International team (across a variety of groups including Strategy, Media, Consumer Products, and Sponsorship) to grow fandom, engagement, and our business internationally.

International Commercial Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Market Development: Support the team in key market development activities (e.g., research, strategy development, execution) in new growth markets for the NFL (e.g., Africa, Brazil, etc.)

  • Strategic Planning: Help in the management of the annual strategic planning process for the International team

  • International Committee: Assist team in the creation of International Committee materials

  • Ad Inventory: Manage distribution of advertising inventory across NFL O&O, Consumer Products, NFL Flag, etc.

Additional Responsibilities: Strategy / IHMA:

  • Strategic Projects: conduct analyses for key strategic international initiatives (e.g., sports betting regulation) in core international markets; leverage relevant data and insights for strategic decision making

  • International HMA: Work with League stakeholders to identify trends & key learnings from club activations; highlight opportunities to better position clubs for success across various aspects of the program (fan development, commercial opportunities, data & analytics, etc.)

  • Data & Reporting: Drive operational efficiency by performing data cleanup and formatting, and implementing effective compilation tools to house information in a centralized and easy to access place

Media (~10 hours a week):

  • Media deals: support the business development team with market and competitor research, as well as economic modeling

  • Partner management: help the team with overall partner management / onboarding and communications

Consumer Products:

  • Work across markets and within current data sets to help build international Consumer Products segment strategy to identify current penetration and opportunity gaps, including new LRP initiatives.

  • Create marketing, tentpole event, and new product launch calendars across major Consumer Products initiatives; focus on Gaming

  • Assist with additional marketing efforts such as product and creative approvals, reporting templates, partner forecasting, events, product allowance, and content delivery across emerging markets such as China and Australia

International Commercial Summer Intern Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of pre-MBA work experience, ideally in consulting, investment banking, or in sports business / management

  • Team player capable of operating cross-functionally across the organization (with people across a variety of different time zones)

MEDIA STRATEGY AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: The NFL´s Media Strategy & Business Development group leads the development and implementation of new media businesses and distribution opportunities for NFL content. It is a highly visible department of approximately twenty professionals with backgrounds in media and technology, consulting, investment banking and private equity who oversee the licensing of NFL content across all media platforms closely with NFL’s executive leadership. Specific activities include market and competitive analysis, business and rights valuation, go-to-market strategy and deal negotiation, and execution and partnership management. This team executes partnerships across a range of business models and structures.

Media Strategy & BD Summer Intern Responsibilities: Expected projects and responsibilities will be varied and flexible based on business needs and will include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the digital media team on projects and planning for the 2021 season, including but not limited to, the development of the NFL’s social and digital media strategies

  • Coordinate collaboration across departments to inform renewal terms and strategic considerations

  • Create presentations, memos, and other reports for the team and senior management

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative industry analysis including competitive analysis, identification of trends, and benchmarking

  • Monitor and analyze performance of existing partnerships

  • Document renewal/project status and distribute information to the team

  • Attend daily internal check-in meetings and weekly meetings with partners

  • Complete business development projects on potential new partnership opportunities

  • Research project on a developing media topic, to be presented at the end of the internship

Media Strategy & BD Summer Intern Preferred Qualifications

  • Major/coursework: Finance, accounting, financial modeling

  • Relevant work experience in investment banking, private equity, corporate strategy, management consulting, or media distribution

Media Strategy & BD Summer Intern Key Attributes / Characteristics:

  • Assess and analyze key media and sports trends, as well as competitive and industry analysis

  • Collaborate with senior executives and relevant internal stakeholders across projects

  • Strong time management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong attention to detail (especially when working across different teams / workstreams)

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to present work to team members

  • Deep interest and enthusiasm in media, technology, and sports industries

Salary / Pay Range

This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries or hourly rates that the NFL believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted job in the location(s) specified. The NFL expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would the NFL consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range. Terms / Expected Hours of Work
